Hard Water Sports offers a 1day white water raft guide class to get you started as a professional whitewater rafting guide.

Sign up for Hard Water Sports raft guide training and learn the art of “guiding” while paddling on the clean and beautiful Kettle River.
In addition to the river and the gear used on the river, you’ll learn about customer service and what it takes to have happy clients at the end of the tour.

The Hard Water Sports raft guide training day classes are scheduled for
April 23 and May 15, 2022.

Raft guide training day- class  $119

Our raft guide training program at Hard Water Sports includes a full day of on and off the water instruction. 
Whitewater workshop covers:

  • Gear maintenance
  • River hazard identification
  • Crisis management

These are just a few of the topics covered in the full day white water workshop.
Be  prepared to be on the water most of the day, including 2 or more river runs on the Kettle River’s class III-IV rapids. Guide training includes running the Kettle River rapids, guide skills, river reading, river rescue, safety, client relations, raft outfitting.

The Hard Water Sport river guide day-class is an intensive full day covering a lot of information.  After a quick meet and great, we are gearing up and on the river.  We start with the basics – how to hold a paddle,  to setting up a Z-Drag for unpinning a stuck raft.
You’ll learn about group dynamics, training your paddling crew, rescue procedures.

Do You Have What it Takes to be a Raft Guide ??

Being a raft guide involves risk and is physically demanding. Raft guide qualifications include being a competent swimmer, being CPR/ first aid certified, having plenty of on the water experience.  The Hard Water Sports raft guide needs to have a intimate knowledge of the rivers they are paddling, including all potential hazards.

Equipment for Raft Guide Training

During the class students will be provided with all essential river rafting equipment.

  • Life Jackets
  • wetsuits
  • splash tops
  • booties, and helmets

Students will practice paddling and steering a verity inflatable rafts and kayaks – all provided by Hard Water Sports.

This training is perfect for athletes who have no or little whitewater guiding experience.

Applicants must be at least 17 years of age.

Rafting classes will meet at the Hard Water Sports guide shop  in downtown Sandstone, Minnesota.

Participating in the whitewater raft guide training class does not  guarantee employment with Hard Water Sports. Hiring of guides from the training class will be based on the ability to perform essential job skills, and ability to work in a team setting.  Students of the class that do get hired as a river guide will receive additional training and will be required to log additional river hours as a guide assistant.
